Established in 1959 by the Biswarup Sevashram Trust, the College was founded with the vision of providing inclusive university education in a supportive and value-driven academic environment, irrespective of religion, caste, or creed. Academic activities began on 10 August 1959 with a modest number of students and a few undergraduate general courses. Over the decades, the institution has grown into a vibrant centre of learning offering a wide range of undergraduate programmes across the streams of Arts, Science, and Commerce.

The College believes in the immense potential of the inner selves of its students and is guided by its motto, Discipline, Dedication, and Determination. It aspires to emerge as a value-based, nationally recognized institution committed to academic excellence, research, innovation, and an entrepreneurial outlook. Rooted in the principles of social justice, diversity, and inclusiveness, the College strives to nurture ethical, creative, and resilient learners capable of contributing meaningfully to society and the nation.

Affiliated initially to the University of Calcutta and later to West Bengal State University, the College enjoys statutory recognition from the Government of West Bengal and recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act. The institution continuously adopts innovative teaching–learning practices while aligning itself with the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), emphasizing inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning.

The sprawling green campus, comprising five academic buildings and rich open spaces, provides a serene yet intellectually stimulating environment. Equipped with eco-friendly initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, vermicomposting, kitchen and butterfly gardens, along with Smart Classrooms, ICT-enabled seminar halls, an open stage, and playgrounds, the campus supports holistic learning. Through academic, cultural, research, and outreach activities, the College remains committed to empowering young women as responsible global citizens and leaders of the future.
